Considered a breakthrough in vegan cuisine, Tal Ronnen’s cookbook has became a must in all personal vegan library!
Do you like rich and decadent foods that can wow your friends and satisfy even the most adamant “meat eater”? Do you like creamy soups, hearty sandwiches, comforting pasta dishes and mind blowing desserts? If you said yes to any of these questions (which of course you did!) then The Conscious Cook, by celebrity chef Tal Ronnen, is a great book for you.
The variety of meals in this book are as numerous as they are delicious and each recipe is better than the previous. My husband and I came across this recipe book on one of our many outings to the book store where we inevitably end up flicking through all the vegan cook books.
My husband is very drawn to cookbooks that have full color, glossy pictures of the food (and who isn’t?!) so when he picked up this book he was hooked. If you can imagine two people, huddled in a corner of the bookstore, nearly drooling into a book, that was us. I am sure we got a few strange looks from passersby but this book is worth a few concerned looks!
As with many vegan cookbooks, there are sections on “Why Vegan?”, myth busting, and what goes in your pantry, but there is also a section called “Meet Cashew Cream” that is very important to read as there are quite a few recipes that require it (It’s SOOOOO worth it!).
The book is sensibly laid out in chapters such as starters, salads, soups, entrees and desserts. There is also a section on seasonal dinner party menus which is fantastic for anyone wanting to host without having to stress over what recipes to serve! The instructions for each recipe are straightforward, easy to follow, and quick to make. You won’t spend hours in the kitchen preparing your favorite dishes, and the results are mind-blowing.
The first recipe we tried was the corn chowder on page 89 which literally changed my life! It was so rich and creamy that I was in love! I used to love chowders as a child so I felt my inner 5 year old doing a dance of joy when I grabbed my second bowl!
My husband then decided to try the Vietnamese-style Tofu Hero with Asian Slaw sandwich on page 105 that was amazing. I must admit I was not as excited as he was when he decided to make it but as soon as I tasted it I was a believer.
We have since tried the Tomato Bisque, California Gardein “Chicken” Salad Wrap and Agave-lime Grilled Tofu with Mashed Sweet Potatoes, all of which are worthy of an article in and of themselves.
The great thing about The Conscious Cook is that there are also vegan cheese recipes that will knock your socks off! No seriously, it will…be warned.
There are still tons of recipes we are eager to try from this book and we would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who likes AMAZING food!
