Eating out in Australia can be very expensive but all you can eat Om Vegetarian is a good and affordable option in town!
Having arrived back in Melbourne from South East Asia, the food prices was always going to be a shock to the system. While wandering the streets of downtown Melbourne I noticed someone holding a bright yellow sandwich board with red font with some very attractive words: Om Vegetarian, all you can eat, 11am – 9pm and $6.50. This instantly went into the memory bank to ensure I returned later in the week.
The day Om Vegetarian would be graced with my presence was a Monday evening. I managed to get two friends along (non-vegans) to check it out. We went to the Elizabeth Street location (apparently they have two other locations in Melbourne). On arrival there was only one other person eating there which did not seem unusual given it was 8pm.
At $6.50 you do not expect much from a Melbourne restaurant, yet Om Vegetarian impressed with a great tasting nutritious meal. Right away I made sure they knew I was vegan and they happily said the curries are vegan and they will ensure there will be vegan naan bread available.
We ordered and were directed to take a seat and they will be with us shortly. Within minutes we were being graced with a large tray containing two curries, rice and naan bread. While this may not seem exciting it is amazing for $6.50. The food is cooked in bulk yet it is warm when it gets to your plate so they must create batches of the curries and rice throughout the day to ensure freshness.
It really did taste great and the three of us enjoyed our meal. The first portion they give you is definitely substantial enough to be considered a meal however the team does not skimp at all regularly asking if you would like more naan bread. The two curries you receive vary but the two choices are normally a vegetable curry and a lentil curry, both healthy and let’s be honest, everyone loves curry!
The second time I went into Om Vegetarian was at lunch time on a Thursday. The restaurant is not right on the street front but you know it is good when you cannot find a seat. I had a quick chat to a couple and they said this was a local for them as they know what they are getting and will be full for the afternoon without breaking the bank.
Om Vegetarian is not the place to go on your first date, but when you are budget and or health conscious this is the place to go for lunch in Downtown Melbourne.
