Meat substitutes are everywhere, but how about bacon made out of coconut? Phoney Baloney’s has made it one tasty reality
I first tried Phoney Baloney’s Coconut Bacon back when they had a small but mighty sandwich shop (called Phoney Baloney’s) in Irvine, California. I loved everything they made, but my favorite two sandwiches were the Grown Up Grilled Cheese (vegan cheese, fig butter, apples, and onions), and the BLTA (Phoney Baloney’s Coconut Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, and Avocado). I went at least once a week, so when they closed I was sad, to say the least. I tried to make coconut bacon myself, but it didn’t even come close to theirs and was actually kind of gross. I was still receiving their email newsletter, so when I learned that they were going to start focusing on selling their awesome Phoney Baloney’s Coconut Bacon, I was excited to see it on store shelves.
What I like best about Phoney Baloney’s is that they are committed to using quality ingredients, which include organic coconut and organic tamari. Phoney Baloney’s Coconut Bacon is both gluten free and vegan, making it even more awesome. My favorite use for Phoney Baloney’s Coconut Bacon is on a BLTA, but it’s also great as a topping on salads, baked potatoes, tofu scramble, and even (I know it sounds weird, just try it and you’ll thank me) on ice cream.
When I was doing research for this review, I was looking at their website and discovered their blog. It is filled with amazing recipes and I almost wish I hadn’t found it because now my weekend is going to be spent making a gluten free version of their Vegan Baked Maple Bacon Doughnut recipe.
They also run one Indiegogo fundraising campaign recently to launch new flavors and I can’t wait to try them all.
