I seem to be cursed with finding amazing vegan food miles and miles away from my home, so I crave it all the time but can’t (reasonably) have it. Evolution Fast Food is one of those places. San Diego is 100 miles away from my home, but I confess that I have made the drive JUST to eat there. The first time I tried it, my husband and I were in San Diego on a trip for our anniversary. I ended up eating there twice in one day because I loved it so much.
My favorite item on the menu at Evolution Fast Food is the first one I tried-their Mushroom Swiss Burger. I’m so used to going to vegan places and realizing they don’t have many gluten free options, other than soup and salad. When I found out Evolution Fast Food offered both a gluten free Organic House Made Black Bean Patty and the option to change to a gluten free bun, I was giddy. The Mushroom Swiss burger consists of a bun, a patty, lettuce, tomato, vegan swiss cheese, sauteed mushrooms, and vegan mayo. It was amazing. It was the best thing I had eaten in a long time, and didn’t taste healthy at all…which was exactly what I was going for. I have also tried their South of the Border Burger, which consists of a bun, a patty, lettuce, tomato, guacamole, salsa, jalapeno, and chipotle sauce. Spicy and also amazing. They offer three different types of patties. Two, the Organic House Made Black Bean Patty (which I love), and the Organic House Made Tempeh Patty (which I haven’t yet tried because I love the Black Bean Patty so much) are gluten free. The 1/4LB “Beef” Patty is made by Gardein and is not gluten free. They offer both regular and gluten free buns. The gluten free bun adds $1.50, but it’s worth it.
The burgers are my favorite items on the menu because it’s so hard for me to find both gluten free patties and buns anywhere else. That being said, they have many other great options if you aren’t into burgers, including a Buffalo Chick’n Sandwich, a “Honey” Mustard Chick’n Wrap, a Bowl of Chili, Taco Roll Ups, and more. For those who prefer raw foods, they serve Raw Tacos, a Raw Burger, and Stuffed Veggies!
They offer the option to “make it a Full Meal Deal” by adding fries and a soda or bottled water, which I always do. Their Potato Fries are surprisingly tasty, and are covered with salt and pepper. When I was there, they had several different drink options, including Blue Sky Soda, my absolute favorite when I get a rare soda craving. Since the last time I was there, they have kombucha on tap! They also have a number of other beverage, smoothie and juice options on the menu (not included in the Full Meal Deal, but worth the additional cost), including Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry Shakes, a Carob Date Smoothie, and a Daily Greens Juice. You can add superfoods to your shake or smoothie, including gogi berries, red maca, and flax oil. My non-vegan husband tried the Chocolate Shake and liked it!
They have an assortment of packaged desserts inside, but one of the best items they serve is their Soft Serve Ice Cream. The flavors vary from day to day, and include standards such as Chocolate and Vanilla, and other more creative flavors such as Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam, Cucumber Apple, Peppermint, and Blue Orange. I get some every time I go, and I have tried Chocolate, Vanilla, and Blackberry!
The next time you’re in the San Diego area (or even if you live 100 miles away, like I do), make a trip to Evolution Fast Food. If you’re anything like me, you will either end up going multiple times during your stay, or you will end up eating way more than you should. Prices are very reasonable, their serving sizes are generous, and you can typically get a burger, fries, and a drink for under $12. You can drive through, but I recommend parking and enjoying their outdoor patio, which is filled with comfy benches and beautiful plants. It’s a relaxing environment, and the perfect place to enjoy their delicious food.
