As one of the media partners of VegFestUK London, taking place at London Olympia on September 27th and 28th, we are doing one special series of interviews with celebrities and special guests that will be speaking or performing during the event and also brands that will be exposing their vegan products there.
I remember the days when “vegan cheese” sounded more like a dream than any possible reality. And I also recall the first time I’ve tried Vegusto, a few years ago, living in Dublin. I have never heard of them before, but since that day the brand has become part of my life.
I was speechless and, many years after, I still find it hard to put in words what Vegusto represents to vegans who have always dairy cheese before the transition (like myself). But there are a few features that I want to highlight here today: its flavor options are unique comparing to other dairy-free options available in Europe (their classic one is a blue cheese alternative); they are soy free (and this has become important for me as you can see in one of the questions below); and they will win the love and admiration of non-vegans (and even dairy cheese lovers such as my mother-in-law).
Having said that, it was a pleasure for me to interview the team behind Vegusto UK, about their work there and their presence on VegFestUK London, this September.
Vegusto is a vegan factory based in Switzerland and that has become very popular in the rest of Europe and in the UK. Could you tell us how the idea of the company was born?
Since 1997, the family-owned Vegi-Service AG has exclusively developed and distributed 100% plant-based foods. To emphasize that gourmet food and vegetarianism can go hand in hand, the brand Vegusto (VE = Vegetarian & GUSTO = taste) was created.
Vegusto cheese line seem to be everyone’s favorite although you have many other products, including meat substitutes. Do you think cheese is your number 1 product line or is the meat free line as popular?
Yes, the cheese range is our top seller, however our meat free range is becoming increasingly popular, with our sausages, burgers, luncheon rolls and sandwich slices being favourited too.
What are your best seller products in the UK and Ireland?
Our whole cheese range is popular, and in our meat free line the Mushroom & Cheese Burger, Farmhouse and Winer Sausage, Smoked Luncheon Roll, Deli Sandwich Slices, Veggie Mince, and Porcini Mushroom Roast.
After almost 17 years of being vegan, I started feeling bad after consuming soy based products and have reduced our family’s consumption of them this year so Vegusto is a really good option for our family. Do you get this kind of feedback from costumers? Like people trying to avoid soy these days?
Yes we do get feedback from customers that have an intolerance to Soya, so they are most pleased when we can tell them that our products are soya free too, as well as vegan, and palm oil free. Our ‘cheese’ products are nut based using organic almonds, and 7 of our 8 cheeses are gluten free too. So our products appeal to a wide range of people who have allergy concerns.
Vegusto is a large sponsor of VegFestUK and I’ve seem the company involved in may events in the UK and also here in Ireland. In your opinion, what’s the most positive aspects of festivals like this?
The most positive aspects are that we are able to reach out to more people who otherwise would not have known that there are great tasting and top quality vegan products on the market nowadays. The customer feedback at these shows is wonderful, and encourages us to continue to provide these products to an even wider audience.
Which products would you tell people visiting VegFestUK London in September “You MUST try this” expecting they will fall in love with it?
At this show we will mostly offer samples of our Vegan ‘Cheeses’. Our top sellers we aim to encourage new tasters to give a try namely;
1. No-Moo Mild-Aromatic – Cheddar Alternative
2. No-Moo Piquant – Likened to a parmesan style cheese
3. No-Moo Melty – Great soft melting cheese, a mozzarella style cheese
4. No-Moo Golden – A butter aroma with a mild fruity flavour.
And of course our sizzling hotdogs we will definitely say “You MUST try this”. Yep and It’s totally vegan!!!
