I was driving to Northern California and needed a place to stop and eat several hours into my trip, so I consulted the Happy Cow app and discovered Bliss Cafe in downtown San Louis Obispo, California. Parking was metered but easier to find than expected, and although we had to walk a little way to get there, it was a welcome break from hours of driving. When I first walked in, I was pleasantly surprised to see that everything on the menu was completely vegan, and there were a number of hearty gluten-free options available other than the usual salads.
I ended up ordering the Tempeh Tacos and the Tempeh Fries with Dipping Sauce. As I waited for my order, I sat out on the patio and enjoyed the peaceful ambiance. There was ample seating available despite it being fairly busy, and there was a good vibe going on both inside and out. My food came out in about ten minutes. The serving size for the Tempeh Tacos was generous (four tacos), and everything was well put together. Each corn taco was stuffed with tempeh, rice, black beans, hummus, tomatoes, cabbage, tomatoes, cilantro, and chutney. The tempeh was the best I have ever had, and was firm and extremely flavorful. I didn’t know how I would feel about the hummus on the tacos because it didn’t really seem to fit in with all of the other ingredients, but it somehow brought everything together and added a pleasant texture. The Tempeh Fries were also very tasty, and came with either hummus, chutney, or a House dressing. I chose the Chipotle dressing, which went well with the Tempeh. It was the perfect meal for me; filling and full of healthy plant based protein.
Although I was completely full after the tacos, I knew I had at least four more hours of driving ahead of me and decided to order a smoothie to go. They had a number of great options and it was hard to choose, but I ended up going with the Gopala. It was made with coconut milk, banana, peanut butter (which I replaced with almond butter), and dates. They had a number of Superfood Boosts available for .50 each, including chia seed, cardamom, ground flax seed, rice protein, maca, and more. I opted to add the chia seed. The refreshing sweetness was the perfect end to an awesome meal.
If you are in the San Louis Obispo area (or just driving through, like I was) I recommend stopping by Bliss Cafe for a meal. The restaurant is clearly focused on utilizing healthy, energizing ingredients, and the prices are very reasonable.
