The Fitzroy area of Melbourne is the holy grail for all that is hip, forward thinking and artistic. Falling right into this melting pot of all that is trendy is a thriving scene of creative, vegan cuisine.
Don’t let this tiny list fool you, there are WAY more vegan establishments to be uncovered from Thai and Chinese to Vietnamese and Indian. However, seeing that I just left Asia after a mighty long two years, I was craving a bit of something different.
If you’re heading to Melbourne, and plan on strolling through Fitzroy,(which you totally should… as many times as you possibly can) make sure to try some of my favorites.
It’s a taco shop and cocktail bar; what a perfect combination. They have a fridge filled with Mexican sodas and the ever delicious Bundaberg Ginger Beer and a shelf of hot sauce for you to pick your poison. The menu is both vegetarian and vegan, bringing loaded nachos, quesadillas and taquitos back into your life. They even have soy ice cream because we both know you got that sweet tooth going on.
Location: 234 Gertrude Street in Fitzroy
Price Range: 7 to 12 Australian Dollars
Hours: 11 am to 9 pm
Smith And Deli
If you want the ultimate vegan selection, you’re going to want to head over to this cruelty free deli. That’s right, in Smith and Deli you can eat all of your favorite bagel sandwiches, creamy salads and desserts without any guilt. They have a whole board filled with soups and sandwich options from smoked salmon and cream cheese on a bagel to chicken parm and chicken salad sandwiches. Bring home big tubs of potato salad or skewered “shrimp” for your BBQ. Don’t neglect their dessert case filled with iced vanilla cakes and sugar cookies.
Location: 111 Moore Street, Fitzroy
Price Range: Very varied depending on what you order. Mostly affordable.
Hours: 8 am to 7 pm but closed on Sunday and Monday.
Smith & Daughters
This one is under the same ownership as Smith and Deli and is just as impressive. It’s not Asian inspired and doesn’t exude everything healthy and organic. It’s just a regular, trendy restaurant with a great bar and a dairy free menu. You can get queso dip and chips for an appetizer, and a fresh artichoke salad for your main while nursing an Elderflower margarita on the side. In fact, the bar is pretty tempting with its decorations and fierce selection of spirits. There is lots of wide open space and a big communal table, making it seem like a great place to come for drinks on the weekends.
Location: 175 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
Price Range: Average to high
Hours: Open from 6pm to 12am on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, from 10 am to 1am on Saturday and 10 am to 10:30 pm on Sunday.
It’s a dainty little cupcake shop and everything is vegan! It gave me quite the surprise as I didn’t see the word vegan anywhere on the sign and thought that I would ask them just in case. They have around 20 different flavors including salted caramel (my favorite!) Grab a drink and use their free WIFI to Instagram the crap out of their adorable little creations.
Location: 261 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
Price Range: The cupcakes cost around $2-$3 Australian dollars
Hours: Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 8pm, Sunday and Monday from 11 am to 5 pm and Wednesday and Thursday from 11 am to 6 pm.
