The Baltic States are an interesting area to explore. Latvia started to get the recognition it has been waiting for within the travel community while both Lithuania and Estonia both have their own charms. When travelling through these countries it is the norm to travel to travel purely to the capital cities, Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius. When I passed through in June 2015 I managed to get to a number of vegan restaurants with the highlight of each restaurant rounded up below.
Tallinn’s Vegan Restoran, The Name Gives It Away
The name of the restaurant gives away that it is indeed a vegan restaurant. Located in the Old Town you wander along the cobblestones as you approach with a strong smell surrounding you as you approach.
You can sit outside, which is awesome when the summer heat is beaming otherwise you are going to be heading inside where cozy is the right word to use. The menu is full of interesting surprises but I couldn’t get enough of the beetroot burger, going back for seconds.
The service was great and given I only purchased food found the meal to be great value relative to the rest of the restaurant options in Tallin. The drinks will sting you however!

Raw Garden Surprise in Riga
Having spent a month in Riga I got to eat at the majority of the best restaurants for vegans. Other than all of the kebab shops, which for me was a vegan heaven with all of them offering a falafel option.
Raw Garden however was somewhere I frequented a few times for the fact that it served raw food because eating falafel kebabs multiple times a day isn’t exactly healthy.
Located outside the tourist area, Raw Garden has a steady clientele of locals everyday with a lunch rush between 11am and 3pm. This was the time I would come here to take advantage of their lunch special.
The menu was regularly rotating and the staff always happy translated the chalk board from Latvian to English for me. Most of the time there was a combination of cold and warm (still defined as raw) meals, not something you would expect.
Raw Garden is a great place for those who like real creativity in their food.

Opening Hours: Mon – Fri: 08:00 – 21:00, Sat: 11:00 – 21:00 Sun: 11:00 – 19:00
The Best Burger in Vilnius
Vilnius was the biggest surprise for me. There was plenty of vegan options around the city, driven by the small community of passionate vegans who are spreading the word through the city.
My favourite meal in Vilnius however was at a pub, Bix. The Bix Burger was so good, with the chickpea patty so hearty I had it most days in Vilnius. The burger comes along with chips and because you are polite it makes sense to wash it down with a beer. Sitting on the tables outside of Bix chatting the afternoons away is one of my best Vilnius memories.
I also wrote a recap of other vegan delights in Vilnius.

The Baltic countries might not scream out as being vegan hotspots and honestly, they still have a way to go yet. I was pleasantly surprised to discover they do however have specialist vegan restaurants in each city!
