When did you all become vegan?
I’ve been vegan for about 12 years. My partner has been vegan for about 3 years. Our kids have been on a vegan diet all their lives.
Did you already have your kids when the transition happen?
I went vegan when I was 16, 9 years before having kids, and my partner decided to go vegan shortly after our first child was born.
Was it obvious to you that your children would be raised vegan?
When I was first pregnant, my partner wasn’t vegan yet, so I assumed he’d want the baby to eat some animal products. But straight away he said he didn’t mind if I wanted us to raise the baby vegan. He saw a vegan diet as very healthy so had no problem with it. I was so happy that we were in agreement, since I knew I would feel wrong feeding my kids animal products.
How old are your children now?
Rian is 3 years and Oran is 9 months.
What’s their favourite foods?
Rian really loves berries, apples and grapes at the moment. He also loves carbohydrate foods like pasta, potatoes and bread. Oran will eat anything I offer him and is also breast fed, but his favourite food is probably bananas.
What’s family’s favourite meal?
We cook a lot of curries since they’re pretty easy to make, with whatever veggies and beans or lentils we have in the house. The kids love lots of spices and flavour.
Do your children understand that they don’t consume anything that comes from animals?
I think they’re too young to understand yet. We haven’t explained to them yet that people eat animal products so I think that Rian assumes everyone is vegan. He knows that some animals, like dinosaurs, eat other animals. But if he hears about humans eating animals he thinks it’s silly! We’ll have to explain it to him soon. He knows what foods he is used to eating so doesn’t show any interest in non-vegan food yet.
Do you have the support of your families and friends to raise your children vegan?
I don’t know if my family and friends think it’s a good idea or not, but we’ve never received any criticism from them and they always say that the kids are healthy and happy. They see the food we eat, and how full of energy the kids are, and they know they’re thriving.
What’s the most asked question regarding raising your children vegan you get?
Will we give them the choice to be vegan or not when they’re older? And I always say that being vegan is an ethical choice, and the kids will have to make that choice when they’re older. For now, they’re too young to understand so we have to choose what they eat. When we think they’re old enough, we’ll let let them choose for themselves. But we won’t cook non-vegan food for them or have it in our house, since there’s no need, we provide nutritious food for them and I don’t want to have to make two separate meals.
We’ll try to raise them to be compassionate and love animals and teach them all about where food comes and nutrition, to give them all the information so they can make their own choice. We don’t need to lie about it to try to convince them to be vegan, just tell them the facts.
I hope they will choose to be vegan and will probably be a little disappointed if they don’t, but of course I’ll love them just as much anyway.
What’s the best advice you can give to other vegan parents out there?
To know that it’s easy to raise kids vegan. There are many people from all over the world raising kids vegan or on plant based diets and they are perfectly healthy.
