You know those mornings when all you want to do is stay in and think about playing “hooky” from work? Then you look in the cupboard and there’s the typical things there for breakfast which won’t do anything to stimulate you; cereal, oatmeal, the usual.
Well, you need something to wake up your senses and give you a metabolic boost! Some people turn to coffee in the morning, others like myself turn to my handy dandy all singing all dancing Wake Me Up Before You Go Go smoothie.
This nutrient packed smoothie has tons of vitamins and minerals to help you get through the day or it acts as the perfect drink to replenish your body after an intense work out.
Of course the kale being the nutritional powerhouse that it is contains tons of nutrients and minerals, including iron. We all know how good iron is for us but the iron in the kale may not be as “bio-available” if not combined with vitamin c. Enter monsieur grapefruit. Not only does the grapefruit contain vitamin c but also contains many anti-inflammatory properties.
The mango contains over 20 vitamins and minerals and anti-oxidants, just for good measure.
Second to last our dear friend banana brings in the potassium, energy and its own variety of nutrients and minerals; and last but not least the almonds adding only a little fat along with your iron and vitamin c makes everything more bio-available and helps the body to absorb all of the vitamins and minerals even more effectively.
All you will need for The Wake Me Up Before Ya Go Go Smoothie:
– a few leaves of kale (or more/less depending on taste)
– one banana (for creaminess, potassium, deliciousness)
– one cup of frozen mango (you can add strawberries but they will make your deliciously green smoothie a strange colour of brown)
– half a handful of almonds (more or less to taste, or your favourite nut)
– water to cover all of the ingredients in a high powered blender (vitamix, for example)
Add the ingredients into the blender and whirl until nice and creamy. Note the more nuts that are added the texture will become slightly more gritty and will require longer in the blender.
